From Field to Fork

Ventura County residents are fortunate to live in one of the most productive agricultural regions in the nation. Growers here produce more than 100 commercial crop varieties, and the annual value of Ventura County production ranks it 10th among the nation’s 3,140 counties.

Thanks to the moderate climate, farmers can ship fresh fruit and vegetables from local fields and orchards to stores and restaurants year-round. Because Ventura County growers produce such enormous quantities of these crops — it takes more than 80 million Americans, for example, to consume the annual strawberry crop — most of this bounty is destined for markets outside the county. Still, local residents can find a wide array of locally grown food at markets, restaurants and roadside stands throughout the area.

Farmers’ Markets in Ventura County

There are eight certified farmer’s markets in Ventura County. To participate in a certified market, farmers and producers must raise, catch, gather, grow or otherwise produce the products they sell. All other food producers must have verifiable proof of production, undergo an on-site inspection, meet all county and state health department regulations and carry appropriate licensing.

Community-Supported Agriculture

Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) allows consumers to buy a share in a farm’s production and receive weekly boxes of whatever vegetables, fruit and other products are ready for market that week. Some CSAs deliver to neighborhood drop-off points; others require that each week’s box be picked up at the farm. Some CSAs bundle the production of several small local farms to provide a wider selection of products.
