Watershed Management Ag Water Quality Coalition Update (Reprinted from March 2005 newsletter) The California Strawberry Commission is the latest entity to join the Ventura County Agricultural Water Quality Coalition. As you may recall, this coalition has been formed in order to draw attention to the consequences to the downstream beneficial users in the agricultural industry of Ventura County and the importance of the enforcement of state and federal water code laws. The issue here is chlorides and those chlorides specifically contained in the discharges of the wastewater treatment plants within L.A. County by the Los Angeles Sanitation District facilities. With the significant commercial and residential development already approved along Ventura County’s easterly border, it is more important than ever before that Ventura County growers be assured of not having the quality of the surface and groundwater degraded as a result of this development or discharges from the wastewater treatment plants within Los Angeles County. To date we are receiving excellent response from both federal and local legislators and have been outreaching to the environmental community to engage them in this important issue. Local representatives have been participating on various technical advisory committees. Having made its initial presentation to the Regional Board at their March 3rd meeting, the Coalition and its intent to represent the interests of Ventura County is becoming more clearly recognized by more people. In the not too distant future, Coalition members will be sitting down at the table for initial discussions with the Los Angeles Sanitation District and sharing our concerns with them. We look forward to a productive dialog not only with the Sanitation District but also the Regional Board staff. The ultimate goal is to reach a mutually beneficial arrangement for this critical resource issue, and that the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board will adopt an appropriate Total Maximum Daily Load allocation (TMDL). We will keep you up to date as these issues continue to unfold. Our sincere thank you goes to all who have stepped up to the plate with their support, either by lending the credibility of their name in conjunction with this activity, or by bolstering the work of the Coalition with monetary contributions.
